雍也篇 6.15

6.15　子曰：“孟之反不伐¹，奔而殿²，将入门，策其马³，曰：‘非敢后也，马不进也。’”

【译文】

孔子说：“孟之反不夸耀自己，军队打仗败退，他留在最后作掩护，将进城门时，他却鞭打着马，说：‘不是我敢于殿后，是我的马不肯快跑。’”

孔子说：“孟之反不夸耀自己，鲁军战败撤退，他殿后作掩护，将进城门时，他却鞭打着马，说：‘不是我敢 于殿后，是我的马跑不快。’”

【English Translation】

Confucius said: “Meng Zi Fan¹ does not brag himself. When the army of the State of Lu retreated in defeat, he brought up the rear to cover the retreat. However, when he was about to enter the city gate, he whipped his horse and said: ‘It’s not that I dared to bring up the rear, but that my horse couldn’t run fast.‘”
