14.21 陈成子弑简公1。孔子沐浴而朝2，告于哀公曰：“陈恒弑其君，请讨之。” 公曰：“告夫三子3。” 孔子曰：“以吾从大夫之后，不敢不告也。君曰‘告夫三子’者。” 之三子告，不可。孔子曰：“以吾从大夫之后，不敢不告也。”

陈恒杀了齐简公。孔子斋戒沐浴后去朝见鲁哀公，他告诉哀公说：“陈恒杀了他的君主，请出兵讨伐他。” 哀公说：“你去报告季孙、叔孙、孟孙三位大臣。” 孔子退下后说：“因为我曾忝居大夫之列，不敢不来报告。但君主却说‘你去报告三位大臣’。” 孔子又到三位大臣那里报告，他们不同意出兵。 孔子说：“因为我曾忝居大夫之列，不敢不来报告。”

【English Translation】
Chen Cheng Zi1 killed Duke Jian of Qi2. After taking a bath and changing clothes, Confucius went to see Duke Ai of Lu. He told Duke Ai: “Chen Heng killed his monarch, so please send troops to attack him.”
Duke Ai said: “Go and report to the three ministers Ji Sun, Shu Sun, and Meng Sun.3”
Confucius left and said: “Because I used to be a minister, I have the responsibility to report to the monarch. However, the monarch said: ‘Go and report to the three families.‘”
Then Confucius went to report to the three families, but they did not agree to send troops.
Confucius said: “Because I used to be a minister, I have the responsibility to report.”
