13.18 叶公语孔子曰：“吾党有直躬者1，其父攘羊2，而子证之3。”孔子曰：“吾党之直者异于是。父为子隐，子为父隐，直在其中矣。”
【译文】
叶公对孔子说：“我们那里有个按直道做事的人，他的父亲偷了羊，他就出来告发。”孔子说：“我们这里行直道的人与此不同。父亲为儿子隐瞒，儿子为父亲隐瞒，直道就在其中了。”

叶公自豪地对孔子说：“我们那里有个诚实正直的人，他的父亲偷了羊，他就出来指证。”孔子说：“我们这里诚实正直的人与此不同。父亲为儿子隐瞒，儿子为父亲隐瞒，这才是诚实正直之所在。”
【English Translation】
Duke Ye proudly said to Confucius: “In our place, there is an honest and upright person. When his father stole a sheep, he came out to testify against his father.” Confucius said: “The honest and upright people in our place are different from that. In our place, the father conceals the truth for his son, and the son also conceals for his father. That is exactly what the honesty and righteousness are.”
