18.6 长沮、桀溺耦而耕1，孔子过之，使子路问津焉2。 长沮曰：“夫执舆者为谁3？” 子路曰：“为孔丘。” 曰：“是鲁孔丘与？” 曰：“是也。” 曰：“是知津矣4。” 问于桀溺。 桀溺曰：“子为谁？” 曰：“为仲由。” 曰：“是鲁孔丘之徒与？” 对曰：“然。” 曰：“滔滔者天下皆是也，而谁以易之5？且而与其从辟人之士也6，岂若从辟世之士哉？”耰而不辍7。 子路行以告。 夫子怃然曰8：“鸟兽不可与同群，吾非斯人之徒与而谁与？天下有道，丘不与易也。”

长沮、桀溺两人一起在耕田，孔子从田边经过，让子路向他们问问渡口在哪里。 长沮说：“车上手持马缰绳的那个人是谁？” 子路说：“是孔丘。” 长沮问：“是鲁国的孔丘吗？” 子路说：“是的。” 长沮说：“他自己就知道渡口在哪里。” 子路又问桀溺。 桀溺说：“您是谁？” 子路说：“我是仲由。” 桀溺说：“您是鲁国孔丘的门徒吗？” 子路回答：“是。” 桀溺说：“如同那江水滔滔，遍天下都一般混乱，能够同什么人去改变它？而你与其跟从那逃避坏人的人，还不如跟从逃避社会的人。”他一面说，一面不停地耙土。 子路回来把这些话告诉孔子。 孔子怅然若失地说：“我们不可与鸟兽合群共处，我们不与人群交往又与什么交往呢？若天下有道，我也不用与你们一起进行变革了。”

【English Translation】
Chang Ju and Jie Ni1 were ploughing in the field together. Confucius passed by the field and let Zi Lu to ask them where the ferry was.
Chang Ju said: “Who is the person holding the reins on the carriage?”
Zi Lu2 said: “That’s Confucius.”
Chang Ju asked: “Is that Confucius from the State of Lu?”
Zi Lu said: “Yes.”
Chang Ju said: “He travels around the world, so he should know where the ferry is.”
Zi Lu then asked Jie Ni.
Jie Ni said: “Who are you?”
Zi Lu said: “I’m Zhong You.”
Jie Ni said: “Are you a disciple of Confucius in the State of Lu?”
Zi Lu replied: “Yes.”
Jie Ni said: “It’s like the surging river water, the whole world is in chaos and irreparable. Who can change such a situation? Rather than following that person who avoids the incompatible persons and then goes to another State, you’d better follow us recluses.” While he was saying this, he kept raking the soil.
Zi Lu came back and told Confucius these words.
Confucius said with a sense of loss: “Now that we can’t get along with birds and beasts in groups, then except for people, whom will we associate with? It is precisely because the world is without righteous Way that we need to change. If there is righteous Way in the world, I don’t need to carry out reforms with you all.”
