5.15　子贡问曰：“孔文子何以谓之‘文’也¹？”子曰：“敏而好学，不耻下问²，是以谓之‘文’也。”

【译文】

子贡问道：“孔文子根据什么得到‘文’的谥号？” 孔子说：“他聪敏而又好学，向不及自己的人请教而不以为耻，所以给他‘文’的谥号。”

子贡问道：“孔文子凭借什么得到‘文’的谥号？” 孔子说：“他聪敏却又好学，向不及自己的人请教而不以为耻，所以给他‘文’的谥号。”

【English Translation】

Zi Gong¹ asked Confucius: “Why could Kong Wen Zi²obtain the posthumous title of ‘Wen’?” Confucius said: “He is intelligent and studious, and does not feel ashamed to ask for advice from the people who are inferior to him.”
