19.10 子夏曰：“君子信而后劳其民；未信，则以为厉己也1。信而后谏；未信，则以为谤己也。”
【译文】
子夏说：“君子在取得信任后才使唤百姓；未取得信任就这样做，百姓会以为是虐害他们。君子在取得信任后才进谏君主；未取得信任就这样做，君主会以为是诽谤他。”

子夏说：“君子在取得百姓的信任后才可指挥百姓做事；未取得信任就这样做，百姓会认为是在欺压她们。君子在取得君主信任后才进谏君主；未取得信任就这样做，君主会认为是在诽谤他。”
【English Translation】
Zi Xia1 said: “A noble person can direct the civilians to do things only after obtaining their trust. If he does so without obtaining trust, the civilians will think that this person are oppressing them. A noble person would remonstrate with the monarch only after obtaining his trust. If he does so without obtaining trust, the monarch will think that this person is slandering him.”
