1.12 有子曰：“礼之用，和为贵1。先王之道，斯为美，小大由之。有所不行，知和而和，不以礼节之，亦不可行也。”
【译文】
有子说：“礼的运用，以和谐为可贵。过去圣明君王的治政之道，美好的地方就在这里，无论小事大事都这样来实行。但是，如遇行不通的时候，只是为了和谐而求和谐，而不用礼加以节制，那也是不可行的。”
【YZG解释】
有子说：“礼的实施，以和谐为贵。往昔圣明君主的为政之法，美妙之处便在于此，无论事情大小都依此而行。然而，若遇到行不通的时候，只是为了和谐而一味追求和谐，却不用礼乐来加以约束，那也无法呈现出关系的美妙之处。”
【YZG English Translation】
You Zi said: “Harmony is of great value for people to practice Rites. In the past, this is the principle of the Way for emperor to govern. Regardless whether a thing matters or not, the emperor always follows this principle. However, when the principle is unfeasible, it is not advisable to merely pursuing harmony without regulating by Rites.”
