17.15 子曰：“鄙夫可与事君也与哉1？其未得之也，患得之2。既得之，患失之。苟患失之，无所不至矣。”
【译文】
孔子说：“那种鄙夫，怎么能同他一起事奉君主呢？他在没有得到职位的时候，担心得不到。当他得到职位以后，又担心失去职位。如果担心失去职位，那就会无所不用其极了。”

孔子说：“那种鄙夫，怎么能同他一起事奉君主呢？他在没有得到职位的时候，担心得不到。当他得到职位以后，又担心失去职位。如果担心失去职位，那就什么都能干得出来了。”
【English Translation】
Confucius said: “How can one serve the monarch together with such mean persons? Before he obtains a position, he worries about not getting it. After he gets the position, he worries about losing it. If he is worried about losing the position, then he can do anything.”
