11.10 颜渊死，子哭之恸[^①]。从者曰：“子恸矣！”曰：“有恸乎？非夫人之为恸而谁为？”

颜渊死了，孔子哭得极度悲哀。跟随孔子的人说：“您过于悲哀了！”孔子说：“是过于悲哀了吗？我不为这样的人悲哀，还为什么人悲哀呢？”

When Yan Yuan died, Confucius wept with extreme sorrow. The students of Confucius said: “You are too grieved.” Confucius said: “Am I too grieved? If I do not grieve excessively for such a person, for whom else would I grieve excessively?”
