17.9 子曰：“小子何莫学夫诗？诗，可以兴1，可以观，可以群，可以怨。迩之事父，远之事君。多识于鸟兽草木之名。”
【译文】
孔子说：“你们这些学生为什么没有人学习诗呢？学习诗，可以培养联想力，可以提高观察力，可以加强合群性，可以掌握讥讽方法。近可用于事奉父母，远可用于事奉君主。还能从中多学得一些鸟兽草木的名称。”

孔子说：“你们这些学生为什么没有人学习诗呢？学习诗，可以激发人的意志，可以提高洞察力，可以通过情感共鸣与他人加强一体感，可以用心平气和的方式表达不同意见。有了这些修养，近可用于事奉父母，远可用于事奉君主。最后，还能从中多学得一些鸟兽草木的名称，从知识中提升认知水平。”
【English Translation】
Confucius said: “Why don’t you students study poetry? Studying poetry can inspire people’s will, enhance their insight, strengthen the sense of oneness with others through empathy, and help to express different opinions in a calm manner. With these accomplishments, one can take care of the parents and also can serve the monarch. Finally, one may also learn the names of birds, beasts, plants, and trees, and improve his cognition from knowledge.”
