14.42 子路问君子。子曰：“修己以敬。” 曰：“如斯而已乎？”曰：“修己以安人1。” 曰：“如斯而已乎？”曰：“修己以安百姓。修己以安百姓，尧、舜其犹病诸2！”
【译文】
子路问怎样才是君子。 孔子说：“自我修身而做到严肃认真。” 子路说：“这样就够了吗？” 孔子说：“自我修身而使亲友安乐。” 子路又说：“这样就够了吗？” 孔子说：“自我修身而使百姓安乐。能自我修身而使百姓安乐，尧、舜大概也觉得不容易做到吧！”

子路请教君子之道。 孔子说：“怀恭敬之心而修炼自身。” 子路说：“这样就行了吗？” 孔子说：“修炼自身而做有利于周围人的事情。” 子路又说：“这样就行了吗？” 孔子说：“修炼自身而做有利于天下百姓的事情。这一点，尧、舜大概也觉得不容易做到吧！”
【English Translation】
Zi Lu asked Confucius about the way of a noble person.
Confucius said: “Cultivate oneself with a respectful heart.”
Zi Lu said: “Is that all?”
Confucius said: “Cultivate oneself and do things that benefit to the people around.”
Zi Lu asked again: “Is that all?”
Confucius said: “Cultivate oneself and do things that benefit to the people of the world. Even Yao and Shun probably found this not easy to achieve!”
