8.2 子曰：“恭而无礼则劳，慎而无礼则葸1，勇而无礼则乱，直而无礼则绞2。君子笃于亲，则民兴于仁；故旧不遗，则民不偷3。”
【译文】
孔子说：“只讲恭敬而不知礼，就会劳倦不安；只讲谨慎而不知礼，就会胆怯懦弱；只讲勇敢而不知礼，就会犯上作乱；只讲直率而不知礼，就会偏激刺人。君子对亲族感情深厚，百姓就会兴起仁风；君子不遗弃故交旧友，百姓就不会冷漠无情。”
【YZG解释】
孔子说：“只讲恭敬而不知礼，就会徒劳无功 ；只讲谨慎而不知礼，就会胆怯懦弱；只讲勇敢而不知礼，就会犯上作乱；只讲直率而不知礼，就会急切偏激。君子对亲族感情深厚，百姓就会兴起仁风；君子不遗弃故交旧友，百姓就不会薄情寡义。”
【English Translation】
Confucius said: “If a person is only respectful to others but does not understand the Rites, his efforts will be in vain. If a person is only prudent but does not understand the Rites, he will be timid and cowardly. If a person is only brave but does not understand the Rites, he will rebel and cause chaos. If a person is only straightforward but does not understand the Rites, he will be impatient and extreme. If the superiors have deep affection for their relatives, the civilians will develop a benevolent atmosphere. If the superiors does not abandon his old friends, the civilians will not be ungrateful and unrighteous.”
