18.5 楚狂接舆歌而过孔子曰1：“凤兮凤兮！何德之衰？往者不可谏，来者犹可追。已而，已而！今之从政者殆而！” 孔子下，欲与之言。趋而辟之，不得与之言。

楚国狂人接舆歌唱着走过孔子坐的车，他唱道：“凤呀凤呀！为什么你的德行这样的衰微？以往的已不可挽回，未来的还可以追补。罢了，罢了！现在的当政者都是些危殆不可救的人啊！” 孔子下车，想同他说话。接舆快步避开了，孔子没能和他交谈。

【English Translation】
A madman from the State of Chu named Jie Yu sang while he was passing by Confucius’ carriage. He sang: “Phoenix! Phoenix! Why has your virtue declined so much? The things which has passed cannot be retrieved, and remonstration is useless. In the future, you still have a chance to make up for it, so hurry to hide out to preserve yourself. Forget it! Forget it! The current rulers are all dangerous and irredeemable people!” Confucius got out of the carriage and wanted to talk to him, but Jie Yu quickly avoided him, so Confucius failed to speak with him.
