6.30 子贡曰：“如有博施于民而能济众，何如？可谓仁乎？”子曰：“何事于仁1！必也圣乎！尧、舜其犹病诸2！夫仁者，己欲立而立人，己欲达而达人。能近取譬3，可谓仁之方也已4。”
【译文】
子贡说：“如果有人能对民众广施恩惠，能周济民众，怎么样？可以说是仁吗？”孔子说：“岂止是仁啊！一定是圣德了！恐怕尧、舜也会觉得难以做到吧！那仁者啊，自己想立身于世，也使别人立身，自己想做事通达，也使别人通达。能从眼前的实际事情这样去做，可说是实行仁道的途径了。”

【English Translation】
Zi Gong said: “If someone can generously bestow kindness on the people and help them with support, can we say it is benevolence?” Confucius replied: “It is more than benevolence but is already the virtue of a sage! I’m afraid that it is difficult even for the Emperor Yao and Shun1! If a sage wants to establish himself in the world, he also enables others to establish. If he seek to understand the Way of the world, he also enables others to understand. If a person can start from the practical matters at hand, it would be considered the way to practice benevolence.”
