14.44 阙党童子将命1。或问之曰：“益者与2？”子曰：“吾见其居于位也3，见其与先生并行也。非求益者也，欲速成者也。”

阙党的一个少年来向孔子传话。有人问孔子：“这是一个求长进的孩子吗？”孔子说：“我看他坐在成人的席位上，又看他与长辈并排行走。这不是个求长进的人，而是一个急于求成的人。”

【English Translation】
A young boy from Que Dang1 came to convey a message to Confucius. Seeing that he was taking on such an important task at a young age, some people asked Confucius: “Is this a child who strives for progress?” Confucius said: “I saw him sitting in an adult’s seat and walking side by side with his elders. So this is not a person who strives for progress, but one who is eager to achieve success.”
