14.39 子击磬于卫1，有荷蒉而过孔氏之门者2，曰：“有心哉，击磬乎！”既而曰：“鄙哉，硁硁乎3！莫己知也，斯己而已矣。深则厉，浅则揭4。” 子曰：“果哉！末之难矣5。”

孔子在卫国，一天正击磬时，有一个人担着草筐从孔子住所的门前经过，他说：“这样击磬是有心事啊！”过一会儿又说：“真鄙薄啊，这种硁硁的磬声！没有人了解自己，也就守着自己好好生活罢了。如果水深，就穿着衣服蹚过去，如果水浅，就提起衣服过去。” 孔子说：“这人好果决啊！我现在还无法盖棺定论，所以无话可说了。”

【English Translation】
Confucius was in the State of Wei, and one day when he was hitting the chime stone, a man carrying a straw basket passed by Confucius’ residence. He said: “Hitting the chime like this, it sounds that there is something on his mind!” After a while he said: “How superficial the sound of the chime stone is! If no one understands you, just live a good life by yourself. If the water is deep, just wade through it while wearing clothes, and if it is shallow, then lift up your clothes and pass through.”
Confucius said: “This man is really resolute! I can’t make a final judgment now, so I have nothing to say.”
