14.17 子贡曰：“管仲非仁者与？桓公杀公子纠，不能死，又相之。”子曰：“管仲相桓公，霸诸侯，一匡天下，民到于今受其赐。微管仲1，吾其被发左衽矣2。岂若匹夫匹妇之为谅也3，自经于沟渎而莫之知也4？”
【译文】
子贡说：“管仲不是仁人吧？齐桓公杀了公子纠，他不仅不跟着死，还任相辅佐桓公。”孔子说：“管仲辅相桓公，称霸诸侯，匡正天下，百姓至今还受着他的恩惠。如果没有管仲，我们大概都是披散着头发，衣襟左开那个样子了。难道要像那些普通男女守着小节小信，自缢于沟渠而没有人知道吗？”

Zi Gong said: “Guan Zhong is not a benevolent person, is he? When Duke Huan of Qi killed the Prince Jiu, and he not only didn’t die for it, but also served as the prime minister to assist Duke Huan of Qi.” Confucius said: “Guan Zhong assisted Duke Huan of Qi to dominated the feudal lords and supported and maintained the world, and the civilians still benefit from his contribution until today. Should we, like some ordinary people, stick to petty integrity and commit suicide in a ditch without anyone knowing?”
