14.13 子问公叔文子于公明贾曰1：“信乎，夫子不言，不笑，不取乎？” 公明贾对曰：“以告者过也。夫子时然后言，人不厌其言；乐然后笑，人不厌其笑；义然后取，人不厌其取。” 子曰：“其然？岂其然乎？”
【译文】
孔子向公明贾问及公叔文子，说：“他老先生不言语，不笑，不取于人，真是这样吗？” 公明贾答道：“这是传说的人说得过分了。他老先生在应该说话的时候才说，所以别人不讨厌他的话；在快乐的时候才笑，所以别人不讨厌他的笑；在合道义的时候才有所取，所以别人不讨厌他的取。” 孔子说：“是这样吗？难道真是这样吗？”

孔子向公明贾问及公叔文子，说：“他老先生不言语，不笑，不取利，真是这样吗？” 公明贾答道：“这是传话的人说得过分了。他老先生在应该说话的时候才说，所以别人不会因为话多而讨厌他的话；在快乐的时候才笑，笑中没有冷嘲热讽，所以别人不讨厌他的笑；在合道义的时候才有所取，所以别人不讨厌他的取。” 孔子说：“是这样吗？难道真是这样吗？”
【English Translation】
Confucius asked Gong Ming Jia1 about Gong Shu Wen Zi2, saying: “This old gentleman does not speak, does not laugh, and does not seek profit. Is it really like this?”
Gong Ming Jia replied: “It is an overstatement of him. This old gentleman speaks only when it is time to speak, so others do not dislike his words because he talks too much. He laughs only when he is happy, and there is no sarcasm in his laughter, so others do not dislike his laughter. He seeks profit only when it is in accord with the righteousness, so others do not dislike his seeking.”
Confucius said: “Is it like this? Could it really be like this?”
