14.12 子路问成人1。子曰:“若臧武仲之知2,公绰之不欲,卞庄子之勇3,冉求之艺,文之以礼乐,亦可以为成人矣。”曰:“今之成人者何必然?见利思义,见危授命,久要不忘平生之言4,亦可以为成人矣。”

【译文】

子路问怎样才是完人。孔子说:“像臧武仲那样的智慧,孟公绰那样的清心寡欲,卞庄子那样的勇敢,冉求那样的才艺,再加上礼乐的文采,也可以说是完人了。”孔子又说:“现在的完人哪里一定要这样?看见利益能想到道义,遇见危难能献出生命,平日与人的约言历久不忘,也可以说是完人了。”

子路问怎样才是完人。孔子说:“能有臧武仲那样的智慧,孟公绰那样的清心寡欲,卞庄子那样的勇敢,冉求那样的才艺,并可以节之以礼,和之以乐,文质兼修,也可以说是完人了。”孔子又说:“现在的完人哪里一定要这样?看见利益能想到道义上是否可取,遇见危难能献出生命,平日与人的约言历久不忘,也可以说是完人了。”


【English Translation】

Zi Lu1 asked what constitutes a perfect person. Confucius said: “On the one hand, this person has the wisdom of Zang Wu Zhong2, few worldly desires like Meng Gong Chuo3, the bravery of Bian Zhuang Zi4, and the talent of Ran Qiu5. On the other hand, he can conform to the Rites and Musical, and cultivate both literary talent and his virtue. Then this person can be considered as a perfect person.” Confucius also said: “Nowadays a perfect person does not have to be like this. If a person can think of righteousness in front of benefits, offer his life in danger, and never forgets his promises over time, then he can also be considered as a perfect person.”
