14.1 宪问耻。子曰：“邦有道，谷1。邦无道，谷，耻也。” “克、伐、怨、欲不行焉2，可以为仁矣？”子曰：“可以为难矣，仁则吾不知也。”
【译文】
原宪问什么是耻辱。 孔子说：“国家有道，应做官得禄。国家无道，也做官得禄，这就是耻辱。” 原宪又说：“好胜、自夸、怨恨、贪欲，这四种缺陷都没有，可以说是仁人了吧？” 孔子说：“可以说做到这样很难了，至于说是仁，那我就不知道了。”

原宪问什么是可耻的。 孔子说：“国家有道，只知做官领取俸禄而无所作为；或国家无道，也只知做官得禄而不能独善其身，二者就是可耻的。” 原宪又说：“好胜、自夸、怨恨、贪欲，这四条都不去做，可以说是仁人了吧？” 孔子说：“能克制住不做可以说很难了，至于说是仁，我还不敢说。”
【English Translation】
Yuan Xian asked Confucius what is shameful.
Confucius said: “When the State is governed by the righteous Way, it is shameful to merely satisfied with being an official and receiving salary without accomplishing anything, or when the State is in disorderly governance, it is also shameful to only focus on being an official and receiving salary without improving personal virtue alone.”
Yuan Xian said: “If a person doesn’t do anything of being overly competitive, boastful, resentful and greedy, can he be considered as a benevolent person?”
Confucius said: “It is very difficult to restrain oneself from doing it, but I dare not say it is benevolence.”
