【YZG English Translation】
Zi Gong asked: “If there is a person who is poor but not flattering, or wealthy but not arrogant, how do you think of said person?”
Confucius replied: “Not bad. However, it is preferable that he is poor but delighted for conforming to the Way, and is wealthy and devoted to Rites.‘”
Zi Gong said: “The Book of Songs says:‘The noble persons improve themselves through discussing with others, which is like the process of cutting and polishing a jade.’ This applies to our conversation, doesn’t it?”
Confucius replied: “Ci (Zi Gong), now we can begin to discuss the Book of Songs together, because you understand the roots of the principle I told you.”
