1.13 有子曰：“信近于义，言可复也1。恭近于礼，远耻辱也。因不失其亲2，亦可宗也3。”
【译文】
有子说：“所定的信约必须合于道义，这才是能够履行的。态度恭敬应合于礼，这才能远离耻辱。所依靠的都是可亲之人，这也就可尊敬了。”

有子说：“所定的信约需合于道义，如此才能去执行。态度恭敬要符合礼的要求，这样才不会因唐突而遭受侮辱。跟亲人及周边的人亲近为善，此心渐渐扩及他人，是值得推崇的。”

You Zi said： “If the promise we made conforms to righteousness, it can be fulfilled. A respected attitude should conform to Rites. Otherwise, it may result in insult due to abruptness. It is a good thing to be kind to your family and friends. It is admirable to gradually spread this kindness to others.”
