13.5 子曰：“诵《诗》三百，授之以政，不达1；使于四方，不能专对2；虽多，亦奚以为？”

孔子说：“熟读了《诗经》三百篇，把政事交给他，却不能把事办成；令他出使外国，却不能独立应对；虽然读了很多，又有什么用呢？”

孔子说：“熟读了《诗经》三百篇，把政事交给他，却不能通达地履行职责；令他出使外国，却不能独立应对；虽然读了很多书，又有什么意义呢？”
【English Translation】
Confucius said: “If a person has thoroughly read the 300 poems of The Book of Songs, but when you entrust him with political affairs, he cannot fulfill his duties proficiently, and when you send him on a diplomatic mission, he is unable to handle it independently, then what is the meaning of reading such a lot of books?”
