13.4 樊迟请学稼1。子曰：“吾不如老农。”请学为圃2。曰：“吾不如老圃。”樊迟出。子曰：“小人哉，樊须也！上好礼，则民莫敢不敬；上好义，则民莫敢不服；上好信，则民莫敢不用情3。夫如是，则四方之民襁负其子而至矣4，焉用稼？”
【译文】
樊迟向孔子请求学种庄稼。 孔子说：“我不如老农。” 樊迟又请求学种菜。 孔子说：“我不如老菜农。” 樊迟出去了。 孔子说：“樊须真是个小人啊！在上位者重视礼，百姓就没有人敢不尊敬；在上位者行事合理，百姓就没有人敢不服从；在上位者诚恳守信，百姓就没有谁敢不诚实。如果做到这样，那么四方的百姓都会背负着他们的孩子来归从，哪里用自己种庄稼呢？”

【English Translation】
Fan Chi asked Confucius to learn how to grow crops.
Confucius said: “I am not as good as a farmer.”
Fan Chi then asked to learn how to grow vegetables.
Confucius said: “I am not as good as a vegetable grower.”
Fan Chi went out.
Confucius said: “Fan Chi is really short-sighted! If a superior values the Rites, none of the civilians would dare not to respect him. If a superior acts appropriately, none of the civilians will dare not to obey. If a superior is sincere and keep his word, none of the civilians will dare not to be honest. In this case, the people from other places will come over with their children to follow this superior, and why does he need to learn how to plant crops?”
