子罕篇 9.6

9.6　太宰问于子贡曰¹：“夫子圣者与？何其多能也？” 子贡曰：“固天纵之将圣²，又多能也。” 子闻之，曰：“太宰知我乎！吾少也贱，故多能鄙事。君子多乎哉？不多也。”

【译文】

太宰向子贡问道：“你们先生是一位圣人吗？他怎么有那么多才技呢？” 子贡说：“是上天赋予他大圣之德，又使他多有才技。” 孔子听到后，说：“太宰知道我呀！我小时候贫贱，所以学会很多鄙贱的技艺。一个君子会学那么多技艺吗？不会的。”

【English Translation】

Tai Zai¹ asked Zi Gong²: “Is your teacher a sage? How come he has so many talents and skills?” Zi Gong said: “It was Heaven that endowed him with the virtue of a sage and made him versatile.” When Confucius heard this, he said: “Tai Zai really knows me! I was poor when I was a child, so I learned a lot of lowly skills. Does a noble person need to learn such many skills? No, he does not.”
