9.3 子曰：“麻冕，礼也。今也纯1，俭，吾从众。拜下2，礼也。今拜乎上，泰也3。虽违众，吾从下。”
【译文】
孔子说：“礼帽用麻料制作，这合乎礼的规定。现在用丝料制作，这样省俭一些，我赞同大家的做法。臣见君，在堂下跪拜磕头，这合乎礼的规定。现在要到堂上才跪拜磕头，这是傲慢的表现。虽然违背大家的做法，我仍然坚持在堂下跪拜磕头的主张。”

孔子说：“礼帽用麻料编制而成，这合乎礼的规定。现在用丝料编制而成，这样省俭一些，我愿意接受大家的做法。臣见君，在堂下跪拜磕头，这合乎礼的规定。现在要到堂上才跪拜磕头，这是傲慢的表现。虽然违背大家的做法，我仍然主张在堂下跪拜磕头。”
【English Translation】
Confucius said: “It is in line with the Rites that the ceremonial hat is made of linen. Now it is made of silk to be more economical, and I am willing to accept what everyone does. It is in line with the Rites that a minister kneels and kowtows to the monarch outside the hall. Nowadays however, they kneel and kowtow to the monarch only when they have entered the hall, which is arrogant act. Although it goes against what everyone does, I still insist on kneeling and kowtowing outside the hall.”
