9.12 子疾病，子路使门人为臣1。病间2，曰：“久矣哉，由之行诈也！无臣而为有臣。吾谁欺？欺天乎？且予与其死于臣之手也，无宁死于二三子之手乎！且予纵不得大葬，予死于道路乎？”
【译文】
孔子病重，子路让孔子的学生以家臣的身份，预备料理丧事。孔子病渐愈，说：“仲由做这种欺假的事很久了吧！我不应该有家臣而装作有家臣，我欺骗谁呢？欺骗天吗？我与其死在家臣手里，还不如死在你们学生手里！而且我纵使不能用卿大夫的盛大葬礼，难道我会死在路上没人葬吗？”

【English Translation】
When Confucius was seriously ill, Zi Lu asked Confucius’ student to prepare for the funeral as Confucius’s vassal. When Confucius gradually recovered, he said: “Zhong You (Zi Lu) has has done such a deceitful thing for a long time! I have no vassal but pretend to have one, whom am I deceiving? Am I deceiving Heaven? I would rather die in front of you students than in front of my vassal! And even if I can’t use the grand funeral of high-level official, would I die on the road with no one burying me?”
