19.19 孟氏使阳肤为士师1，问于曾子。曾子曰：“上失其道，民散久矣。如得其情，则哀矜而勿喜！”

孟氏命阳肤任典狱官，阳肤向曾子请教。曾子说：“在上位的人不按道行事，民心离散已久。如果你审知犯罪实情，应该哀悯他们，而不要高兴自己的明察！”

【English Translation】
Meng appointed Yang Fu as the prison officer, and Yang Fu asked Zeng Zi1 for advice. Zeng Zi said: “The persons in high positions do not act according to the righteousness, and the civilians are no longer united for a long time, so they don’t know what to do. If you know the truth of the crime, you should feel pity for their helplessness, and don’t be complacent because of your insight!”
