19.18　曾子曰：“吾闻诸夫子：孟庄子之孝也¹，其他可能也，其不改父之臣与父之政，是难能也。”

【译文】

曾子说：“我听老师说过：孟庄子的行孝，别的方面还可做到，而他不换父亲所用的人，不变父亲所实行的政事，这是很难做到的。”

曾子说：“我听老师说过：孟庄子的孝行，其他方面别人还可做到，而他继位后不换父亲所用的人，不变父亲所推行的政策，这是别人很难做到的。”

【English Translation】

Zeng Zi¹ said: “I heard from my teacher that, as for the filial piety of Meng Zhuang Zi², others can still achieve it in other aspects, but as to the aspect that after he succeeded to the throne, he did not replace the people used by his father and did not change the policies promoted by his father, it is very difficult for others to do.”

2. Meng Zhuang Zi (孟庄子): A minister in the State of Lu, with the surname Zhong Sun(仲孙) and the given name Su (速). His father, Zhong Sun Mie(仲孙蔑), also known as Meng Xian Zi(孟献子), was also a minister in Lu and had virtuous qualities. ↩
