【English Translation】
Zi Zhang1 asked about how to make things work.
Confucius said: “If a person is sincere and trustworthy in words, and respectful and solemn in acts, even in remote and uncivilized areas, the things can work. If a person is not sincere and trustworthy in words, and not respectful and solemn in acts, can things work even in his hometown? Standing as if the words ‘sincerity, trustworthiness, and solemnity’ were towering straight in front of you, and sitting in a carriage as if the words ‘sincerity, trustworthiness, and solemnity’ are engraved on the crossbeam in front of the carriage. Only in this way can things work everywhere.” Zi Zhang wrote these words on the large belt tied around his waist.
