5.5 或曰：“雍也仁而不佞1。”子曰：“焉用佞？御人以口给2，屡憎于人。不知其仁，焉用佞？”
【译文】
有人说：“冉雍有仁德，但没有口才。” 孔子说：“何必要有口才呢？巧嘴利舌地与人辩对，常常被人讨厌。我不知道冉雍是否可称为仁，但何必要有口才呢？”

有人说：“冉雍有仁德，但没有口才。” 孔子说：“何必要有口才呢？能言善辩，常被人憎厌。如果一个人做不到“仁”，有口才有何用呢？”
【English Translation】
Someone said: “Ran Yong1 has benevolence, but lacks eloquence.” Confucius said: “Why is eloquence necessary? The articulate people are often detested by others. If a person is not benevolent, what is the eloquence used for?”
