5.18　子曰：“臧文仲居蔡¹，山节藻棁²，何如其知也？”

【译文】

孔子说：“臧文仲把一只大乌龟养在屋子里，乌龟的居室有雕刻成山形的斗拱和绘有藻草的梁上短柱，他的聪明怎么是这个样呢？”

孔子说：“臧文仲把一只用于占卜的大龟养在屋子里，乌龟的居室有雕刻成山形的斗拱和绘有藻草的梁上短柱，这样怎能算是有智慧呢？”

【English Translation】

Confucius said: “Zang Wen Zhong¹ keeps a large tortoise for divination in his house. The tortoise‘s room has brackets carved in the shape of mountains and short columns painted with aquatic plants. How could this behavior be considered as wisdom?”
