5.10 宰予昼寝。子曰：“朽木不可雕也，粪土之墙不可杇也1。于予与何诛2？”子曰：“始吾于人也，听其言而信其行；今吾于人也，听其言而观其行。于予与改是。”
【译文】
宰予在白天睡觉。孔子说：“腐朽的木头不能雕刻，粪土般的墙壁不能粉刷。对于宰予，还有什么值得我责备的？”孔子又说：“先前我对别人，听了他的话便相信他的行为；如今我对别人，听了他的话还得观察他的行为。是因为宰予让我有了这样的改变。”

宰予在白天睡觉。孔子说：“腐朽的木头不能雕刻，粪土般的墙壁不能粉刷。对于宰予，我还能用什么话责备呢？”孔子又说：“先前我对别人，听了他的话便相信他的行为；如今我对别人，听了他的话还得观察他的行为。是因为宰予让我有了这样的改变。”
【English Translation】
Zai Yu1 slept in the daytime. Confucius said: “The rotten wood cannot be carved, and dung-like walls cannot be painted. What can I say to criticize Zai Yu?” Confucius also said: “In the past, I would believe others’ behaviors only by their words. Now, besides their words, I also observe their behaviors. It is because of Zai Yu that I have had such a change.”
