3.17　子贡欲去告朔之饩羊¹。子曰：“赐也！尔爱其羊，我爱其礼。”

【译文】

子贡打算取消每月初一用于告祭祖庙的那只羊。孔子说：“赐啊！你爱惜的是那只羊，我爱惜的是那礼。”

子贡打算取消每月初一用于告祭祖庙的那只羊。孔子说：“赐啊！你珍惜的是那只羊，我珍惜的是祭礼。”

【English Translation】

Zi Gong² intended to cease offering the sheep as the sacrifice to worship the ancestral temple on the first day of each month. Confucius said: “Ci (Zi Gong)! What you cherish is that sheep, whereas what I cherish is the sacrificial Rituals.”

1. 告朔：一种礼仪。天子于每年秋冬之交向诸侯颁发第二年的历书，告知每月初一的日期以及该年有无闰月，称“颁告朔”。诸侯把历书藏于祖庙，并在每月初一杀活羊祭于庙，然后到朝廷听政。其时鲁国国君已不再亲临祖庙行祭，仅保留供羊的形式而已。朔，农历每月初一。饩（xì）羊：用作祭品的羊。 ↩
