八佾篇 3.15

3.15　子入大庙¹，每事问。或曰：“孰谓鄹人之子知礼乎²？入大庙，每事问。”子闻之，曰：“是礼也。”

【译文】

孔子进入周公庙，对每件事都发问。有人说：“谁说这个鄹人的儿子懂得礼呀？他进了太庙，每件事都要问。”孔子听到这话，说：“这正是礼啊。”

孔子进入周公庙，对每件事都向人请教。有人说：“谁说这个鄹人的儿子懂得礼呀？他进了太庙，每件事都要问。”孔子听到这话，说：“这正合乎礼的精神。”

【English Translation】

Confucius entered the temple of Duke Zhou and asked others about everything. Some people said: “Does the son of Zou³ know the Rites? He entered the temple and asked for a lot.” Hearing this, Confucius said: “This is just in accordance with the Rites.”

1. 大庙：开国君主的庙。这里指周公庙。大，同“太”。 ↩

2. 鄹（zōu）人之子：指孔子。鄹，鲁国地名，今山东曲阜东南。孔子父亲叔梁纥曾做过鄹邑大夫，这里的“鄹人”即指孔子父亲。 ↩

3. The son of Zou (鄹): It refers to Confucius whose father was used to be a minister of the county of Zou (鄹). ↩
