3.10 子曰：“禘自既灌而往者1，吾不欲观之矣。”

孔子说：“举行禘礼时，第一次献酒以后，我就不愿再看下去了。”

Confucius said: “In the Ritual of Di2, I did not want to watch it anymore after the first offering of liquor.”

禘(dì)：祭名。这里指隆重的宗庙大祭，只有天子才能举行。周成王因周公旦有重大功勋，封周公于鲁，特令鲁君以禘礼祀周公。后鲁国国君把禘祭扩大到其他范围，是越礼行为，因此孔子不愿看。灌：祭祀开始时，献酒于受祭者的仪式。 ↩

the Ritual of Di (禘): It is a grand ceremony for honouring the ancestors which only can be held by the Emperor. Because of the significant contributions of Duke of Zhou, King Cheng of Zhou (周成王) ordered the ruler of Lu to hold the Ancestral Ritual of Di to honour Duke of Zhou (周公). Later on, however, the ruler of Lu expanded the use of this ritual for other purpose, which violates the Rites, and so Confucius did not want to watch. ↩
