八佾篇 3.1

3.1　孔子谓季氏¹：“八佾舞于庭²，是可忍也³，孰不可忍也⁴？”

【译文】

孔子谈及季氏，说：“他在庭院中使用八佾的乐舞，这样的事他都忍心去做，还有什么事会不忍心做？”

孔子谈及季氏，说：“他在庭院中使用八佾的乐舞，这样的事他都忍心去做，还有什么事做不出来呢？”

【English Translation】

Speaking of the Ji⁵, Confucius said: “Ji had eight lines of ceremonial dancers perform in his courtyard⁶, which is used by Emperor in ceremony according to Rites. If he can do the thing like that, what else can’t he do?”

1. 季氏：鲁国大夫季孙氏，可能指季平子，名意如。 ↩

2. 八佾（yì）：天子所用的一种乐舞。佾，乐舞行列，每列定为八人。八佾即八列六十四人。按礼制，诸侯用六佾，大夫四佾，士二佾。一说每佾人数与佾数相等。 ↩

3. 忍：忍心。一说容忍。今取前说。 ↩

4. 孰：什么。 ↩

5. Ji (季氏): One of the Three Families who usurped governmental power of state of Lu. Maybe here it specifically refers to Ji Ping Zi (季平子) with given name Yi Ru (意如). ↩

6. According to the Rites, the vassals use six lines of dancers in the ceremony, the ministers use four lines, and the scholar-officials use two lines. ↩
