2.7 子游问孝1。子曰：“今之孝者，是谓能养。至于犬马，皆能有养2。不敬，何以别乎？”
【译文】
子游问孔子怎样才是孝。孔子说：“现在的所谓孝，认为能够供养父母就行了。照这样，连犬马也有人喂养着。如果不存孝敬之心，供养父母与喂养犬马有何区别？”

子游请教孔子孝道。孔子说：“如今所谓的孝，人们认为能够供养父母就足够了。这般看来，连犬马都有人在饲养。如果缺乏孝敬之心，那供养父母和喂养犬马有什么差异呢？”

Zi You3 asked Confucius about filial piety. Confucius said： “Nowadays, people think that the so-called filial piety means offering support for parents only. In this sense, even dogs and horses are fed by people. Without reverence to the parents, what’s the difference between the parents supporting and the animals feeding.”
