2.5　孟懿子问孝¹。子曰：“无违。”樊迟御²，子告之曰：“孟孙问孝于我³，我对曰，无违。”樊迟曰：“何谓也？”子曰：“生，事之以礼；死，葬之以礼，祭之以礼。”

【译文】

孟懿子向孔子问孝道。孔子说：“不要违背礼。” 当樊迟为孔子驾车的时候，孔子告诉他说：“孟孙向我问孝道，我回答他不要违背礼。” 樊迟问：“这是什么意思呢？” 孔子说：“父母活着，按照礼侍奉他们；父母去世，按照礼安葬他们，按照礼祭祀他们。”

孟懿子请教孔子孝道，孔子说：“不要违背礼。” 后来，当樊迟为孔子驾车时，孔子对他说：“孟孙向我询问孝道，我告诉他不要违背礼。” 樊迟听闻后问道：“这究竟是什么意思呢？” 孔子则说：“父母在世时，按照礼侍奉他们；父母过往后，按照礼安葬他们，并且按照礼祭祀他们。”

【YZG English Translation】

Meng Yi Zi⁴ asked Confucius about filial piety, and Confucius said： “To be filial, you should not violate Rites.” Later on, when Fan Chi⁵ drove for Confucius, Confucius said to him： “Meng Sun⁶ asked me about filial piety, and I told him not to violate Rites.” Fan Chi replied： “What did you mean by that?” Confucius said: “When parents are alive, you should take care of them based on Rites; after parents passed away, you should deal with funeral and memorial ceremony based on Rites.”
