2.20 季康子问1：“使民敬、忠以劝2，如之何？”子曰：“临之以庄，则敬；孝慈，则忠；举善而教不能，则劝。”
【译文】
季康子问：“要使百姓恭敬、忠诚而努力，应该怎么做？”孔子说：“你庄重地对待他们，他们就对你恭敬；你孝顺老者，慈爱幼小，他们就对你忠诚；你举用善人，并教导能力弱的人，他们就会勤奋努力。”

季康子请教：“要使百姓恭敬、忠诚而互相勉励，应该怎么做？”孔子说：“你庄重地对待他们，他们就对你恭敬；你孝敬老者，慈爱幼小，他们就对你忠诚；你举用正直善良的人，并教导能力弱的人，他们就会互相勉励。”

Ji Kang Zi3 asked: “How can I make the civilians respectful, loyal and encourage each other?” Confucius said: “If you treat the civilians solemnly, they will be respectful to you. If you respect the aged and love the young, the civilians will be loyal to you. If you appoint the righteous people to guide those who lack abilities, the civilians will encourage each other.”
