2.19 哀公问曰1：“何为则民服？”孔子对曰：“举直错诸枉2，则民服；举枉错诸直，则民不服。”
【译文】
鲁哀公问道：“怎么做才能使百姓服从？”孔子答道：“举用正直的人，置于邪恶的人之上，那么百姓就会服从；举用邪恶的人，置于正直的人之上，那么百姓就不服从。”

鲁哀公请教：“怎样做才能使百姓服从呢？”孔子回应道：“提拔正直的人，并将其置于邪曲的人之上，百姓就会服从；而提拔邪曲的人，将其置于正直的人之上，百姓就不会服从。”

Duke Ai3asked: “How can I make the civilians obedient to the government?” Confucius said: “If the righteous people is promoted to be superiors of the wicked people, the civilians will obey the governor. On the contrary, if the wicked people is promoted to be superiors of the righteous people, the civilians will not be obedient.”
